SCHOOL HISTORY of AL AZHAR 4 ISLAMIC SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL

The Al-Muhajirien Islamic Education Foundation (Yayasan Pendidikan Islam Al-Muhajirien Jakapermai), in collaboration with the Al-Azhar Islamic Boarding School Foundation (Yayasan Pesantren Islam Al-Azhar), initiated the establishment of Al Azhar 4 Islamic Senior High School Kemang Pratama Bekasi in the 1995/1996 academic year. This initiative aimed to accommodate graduates of Al Azhar 6 Islamic Junior High School Jakapermai Bekasi.
Thanks to the Decree of the Head of the West Java Provincial Office of the Department of Education and Culture No. 276/1.02/Kep/OT/1996, Al Azhar 4 Islamic Senior High School Kemang Pratama was officially permitted to operate, under the leadership of Mr. Santoso as the principal.
Initially, teaching and learning activities took place in the building of Al Azhar 6 Islamic Junior High School located on Jalan Cendana 11, Jakapermai, South Bekasi. The first batch of students consisted of 79 students—40 in class IA and 39 in class IB. Of these, 34% were graduates of Al Azhar 6 Islamic Junior High School Jakapermai. At the time, the school had 15 teachers, supported by one administrative staff member and one maintenance staff member.
In the 1996/1997 academic year, the school moved to its new location on Jalan Mitra Duta, Kemang Pratama, East Bekasi. It was here that the name of the school officially changed from SMU (Sekolah Menengah Umum) to SMA (Sekolah Menengah Atas) Al Azhar 4 Islamic Senior High School Kemang Pratama Bekasi, based on the Decree of the Head of the Al-Azhar Islamic Boarding School Foundation’s Education Division No. 222/YPI/Pend/1998, dated March 6, 1998.
At the end of the 1997/1998 academic year, the school graduated its first cohort of 64 students—30 from the Science program and 34 from the Social Sciences program. Their achievements marked the beginning of the school’s excellence. Based on the average National Final Exam Scores (NEM) across public and private high schools in Bekasi Regency and Municipality, the Science class ranked 4th out of 45 schools, while the Social Sciences class ranked 3rd out of 58 schools.
In March 1999, Al Azhar 4 Islamic Senior High School was granted “equal status” (status disamakan), which allowed students of the second cohort to take independent national exams (EBTA/EBTANAS). This was granted through the Decree of the Head of the West Java Provincial Office of the Department of Education and Culture No. 223/1.02/Kep/PP/1999, dated March 10, 1999. The second graduating class achieved remarkable results, with the Science program ranking 2nd and the Social Sciences program ranking 1st in Bekasi. These achievements further enhanced the school’s reputation and attracted even more interest from the community.
Al Azhar 4 Islamic Senior High School Bekasi adopts the National Curriculum as its foundation for formal education, enriched with the Al-Azhar Curriculum to strengthen character formation and Islamic values. Over time, the school has continued to innovate and has recently introduced the Cambridge Curriculum as part of its efforts to broaden students’ global perspectives and enhance their competitiveness at the international level.
In addition to integrating these three curricula, the school has also evolved into a digital-based institution. Every classroom is equipped with smart boards, and both teachers and students use iPads as the main tools for learning. This innovation aligns with the school’s tagline: “Islamic School, Digital Learning, and International Excellence,” which reflects its commitment to producing spiritually grounded, academically excellent, and globally competitive graduates.
Since its founding in the 1995/1996 academic year, Al Azhar 4 Islamic Senior High School Bekasi has shown significant progress. As of the 2024/2025 academic year, the number of graduates continues to grow, reflecting increasing public trust in the quality of education the school provides. Beyond numbers, students have also earned numerous achievements in academic and non-academic fields at regional, national, and international levels. These accomplishments have positioned the school as a leading institution in Bekasi and surrounding areas.
Year after year, the school has consistently produced outstanding graduates who go on to attend top public universities (PTNs) in Indonesia. In 2024, a total of 294 students successfully passed the selection process for PTNs—this figure represents those accepted into two of Indonesia’s top universities. This achievement is clear evidence of the school’s high educational standards and national-level competitiveness.
As of mid-2025, 254 students have already been accepted into various PTNs, with the number expected to rise as additional selection processes are completed. This upward trend demonstrates the strong quality and competitiveness of Al Azhar 4 Bekasi’s graduates.
